This week we start with the still revolutionary sounds of John Coltrane with Eric Dolphy. Next is a major investigation of DJ/Producer/& Label owner Joe Claussell. We close with a sampling of music by Djavan, a major Brazilian songwriter. He’s joined by Renato Vargas, Be Happy & Kiko Continentino, Arthur Maia & Claudio Zoli, Lenine, Caetano Veloso, Sandra de Sa, Rosa Passos, Gal Costa, Angela Roro and Ze Ricardo.

This week we honor three masters: Miriam Makeba, Harold Battiste, and Nat King Cole. Each of them has made a major contribution to our music and to world culture.

Motown, reggae, rap & Brazil unite. We kick off with classic duets from Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell. We follow up with a feature on emerging Los Angeles rapper Blu. And conclude with Jamaican and Brazilian versions of Motown hits from Edmon e Alexandre Dantas, Lloyd Charmers, Jazz Jamaica, Eric Donaldson, Sandra de Sa, Ken Boothe & B.B. Seaton, Pat Rhoden, Marisa Monte, Delroy Wilson, Chosen Few, John Holt, The Heptones, Mighty Diamonds, Pioneers, Derrick Harriott, Byron Lee & The Dragonaires, and Stephen Marley. Ah what a wonderful week this is.

We start of with classic contributions from The Drifters and follow with Malian kora player Toumani Diabate doing blues (with Taj Mahal) and jazz (with Roswell Rudd). We top it off with over an hour of remixes of Motown classics by Marvin Gaye (both solo and with Tammi Terrell), The Sisters Love, The Supremes, The Jackson Five, The Temptations, and Smokey Robinson & The Miracles.

We open with Songhai 1 & 2, a classic collaboration between flamenco, kora and jazz bass. We then travel to Palestine to check out music from Rim Banna, the voice of Palestine. We close with a total of 15 different versions of Herbie Hancock songs featuring: Jon Lucien, Bobby Hutcherson, Dianna Reeves/Geri Allen, Robert Glasper, Leny Andrade, SF Jazz Collective, Chano Dominguez, Jazz Jamaica Allstars, The Blue Note 7, Ahmad Jamal, Norman Connors, Howard Johnson, and Quincy Jones.
