This is the week of January 28th, 2008

Jazz and Cape Verde. This is the most extensive jukebox we’ve ever posted. Starts out with a Freddie Hubbard/Lee Morgan cutting contest. Concludes with variations on Freddie Hubbard’s composition "Red Clay" offered up by Jack Wilkins, Mark Murphy, Charles Earland, Dwele with Roy Hargrove, Freddie Hubbard, Soil and Pimp Sessions, Solsonics, and the CTI All-Stars. In the middle is a major investigation of contemporary music from Cape Verde featuring Cesaria Evora, Lura, Teofilo Chantre, Mayra Andrade, Tcheka and Sara Tavares. Enjoy!

This is the week of January 21st, 2008

Rhythm came to America from Africa and Europe gave us the blues (at home and abroad). This week we start in Cape Verde, islands off the West Coast of Africa with Cesaria Evora and The Mendes Bros. We conclude with 14 versions of an Afro-Cuban classic, "Drume Negrita," featuring Badi Assadd, El Negro Ojeda, Omara Portuondo, Francisco Cespedes, Gerardo Nunez & Jeanne Lee, Emilio Santiago, Gloria La Nina Rivera & Robin Adnan Anders, Chucho Valdes, Haila, Ray Barretto, Joyce, Bola de Nieve, Selma Reis and Andy Bey. We guarantee there’s at least one song in here you will absolutely love.

This week we feature an out-of-print classic from Duke Ellington, America’s greatest composer and the standard bearer for 20th century jazz. We also sample new directions from The Cinematic Orchestra. Both orchestras feature great compositions and engaging solo work. Enjoy.

Put on your traveling shoes/your dancing shoes. First we head down to Jamaica for some early dancehall featuring Yellowman, Tappa Zukie, Tenor Saw and U-Roy. And then we jump to Scotland (that’s right, Scotland) for some Finley Quaye. Then down to New Zealand for some Whirimako Black and Mark de Clive-Lowe. Been around the world and we got more soul…
