JANELLE MONAE / Live @ SxSW

OK, some people have all the luck. Last week we featured Lupe Fiasco who was having a bunch of problems with his label Atlantic Records. Some artists would give virtually anything to be signed to a major label, others artists value their independence. As the digital revolution shakes up the recording industry, the majors are increasingly falling out of favor… except, the big boys still have a lot weight to slight around.

Janelle Monáe is an Atlantic Records label mate of Lupe Fiasco. When Lupe cancelled his appearance at SxSW, one of the premiere music showcases in America, Janelle was inserted into the program.

She was ready. I mean super-ready. She had a full show including horns and backup singers. This wasn’t just a showcase, this was a full-fledged blow out. And the program was broadcast, which is how the guys at All The Way Live got to it, and they in turn dropped it on the internet. And voila, you now have it here on BoL.

I’ve already written (here and here) my admiration for what Ms. Monáe is doing. She’s a P-Funk grandchild all grown up and dropping her own bombs. She sings. She dances. She writes her own material and puts on one freaky-deaky, hell of a show. She is both fun-loving and deeply serious, ultra attractive but an anti-sex symbol.

What more could you ask for in popular music but more… and since I know you want more, and since I’ve been brought up with manners—I know how to share; if I get some happening music, you’ll get some too. So here it is in all her archandroid glory, Wonderland presents Ms. Janelle Monáe.

Thanks for sharing the music.

Janelle Monae has stage presence and she’s truly a gift. She gave the best performance from a young artist in quite some time and that’s from the perspective of only the audio from the set and the short youtube video of her performing Dance or Die.

For some reason when I see her perform, she puts me in the frame of mind of a reincarnated alter ego of one Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez.

Thanks you, Janelle Monae for being who you are!
