VARIOUS ARTISTS / “In A Sentimental Mood Mixtape”
I’ve said it before and undoubtedly will say it again many more times, Duke Ellington is not only a genius, he is the greatest American composer ever. There’s no one in sight who is even running a close second.
This week we feature 11 versions of “In A Sentimental Mood.” We’ve focused on “Sentimental Mood” before. Go here to read what we wrote.
Once again, each of these versions offers a different interpretation that has something distinctive in either the arrangement or the performance. There are literally hundreds of versions out there. This time I tried to select versions that may have been overlooked but which offer something beyond just a good solo or good vocal performance.
Just want to mention one more thing. The last version ends abruptly. South African alto saxophonist Zim Ngquwana is an absolute monster musician. This track is from a concert performance during which Zim segues straight into another number, hence I just cut it without a fade out or anything.
I know it leaves you wanting to hear more—that’s why they have a back button on the computer keyboard and in most software programs. ;->)
