I don’t want to make a comment in the heat of the moment that’ll come back to haunt me, but right at this moment, HerFavoriteColo(u)r is sounding good enough to be considered a classic (eventually…it’s not an instant thing).

But check this – it’s never going to actually be released. Not in it’s current form, at least. Between all the music samples (Hendrix, Holiday, Mayfield, etc.) and movie snippets (Crumb, Closer, She’s Gotta Have It, etc.), it simply can’t be cleared. The sample clearances would cost more than it could possibly be worth to actually release it. Which, I guess, is why Blu gave it to us for free via his MySpace.

So although I’m kinda upset that I can’t buy my own official copy from somewhere and even though the sound quality is sketchy here and there, I’m still ecstatic to hear a young cat doing something so interesting, moving and real in the hip-hop genre. Add in that it’s a self-produced project – meaning, this dude did all the tracks AND the MCing himself – and, like I said, I’m sitting here just stunned.

Wonder if he’ll do any of these pieces live? Now that’d be something….
