I love this album. Everytime I see the cover art, I'm transported to Maisha and Kina's living room, for some reason. They had a miniscule number of albums compared to your collection, Baba. But this one was always right there by the turntables and I, myself, put it on many many many many many times. Don't know why it appealed to my pre-adolescent/adolescent self so much, but I believe it's brilliant and agree with your assessment, Mtume. That first line from "I Am That I Am" is such a classic and applicable in so many situations. Everytime I hear Tosh sing: I am not in this world to live up to your expectations, neither are you here to live up to mine--I just have to stomp my feet or clap my hands or give some other kind of nonvocal, black church-ish amen. It is that flat out, unadorned truth that you wrote about. And they are human truths. All of them. "Everybody's talking about crime, tell me who are the criminals?" For real! I have to say though, for as much as I LOVE Equal Rights, the three selections you included from Legalize It touch me in a very profound way. Something about the spirit and the sound of all three of those songs shored me up, made me sit with my chest a little higher, spoke to the artist/creator in me and filled me with hope/certainty/pleasure of my power/will/desire to create/exist/live be a fully creatively expressed human being.
