amen for the career overview on taj! I kinda like the relaxed rawness and intimacy - just makes me wish I was sitting in the audience and soakin up the vibes and the vocal interplay. I love Taj’s work - from Hawaii to Africa, he always seems to have his hand on the essence of the music. cold night, warm fire, press play, again

I own both disks - Recycling The Blues & Other Related Stuff, and In Progress & In Motion. They are both incredible jewels (and also somehow a bit redondant if my memory is exact) and yet shows only little of the work of Taj Mahal (which is strange for an anthology) I think there is a ine inside saying Taj chose the tracks he liked the most. It could be a clearer way of depicting this 3 CD set.

Thnaks for the post. I’ve been looking for years for an album I bought on cassette with Taj and the pointer sisters. it was called “Oh, So Good and Blues”. Unlike many of my old favortie albums this was NOT re-released as a CD. From your article it seems many of those great performances (Little Red hen, Frankie and Albert,etc) may on the 3-CD set you mentioned.

This post is awesome. I know, people use that word too much these days. But I mean biblically awesome, like burning bush/wheel within a wheel awesome. The Taj/Pointer collaborations on “Recycling the Blues” are among my favorite recordings of all time; and it was wonderful to read someone give them something like their due. By the way, have you ever noticed that in a quiet room with good speakers or headphones, you can hear a very soft jingling? I’ve always imagined it to be the tinkling of a charm bracelet on June Pointer’s slender wrist …
