Absolutely brilliant job of connecting the "Thought Process" behind these songs. With the exception of Prince's contribution, I'd always connected the other songs in the exact same way (in my own brain at least).

Prince's "She’s Always In My Hair" is a perfect missing piece to the "She Lives in My Lap" puzzle - especially when you think about Dre's execution of the song.

In the soundtrack that is my life the song "13th Floor" has always symbolized the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. As a young person it helped me deal with transition and come to terms with the fact that nothing lasts forever - that progress and change are inevitable. Now that I'm older I look back on it nostalgically as a reminder to savor every moment of happiness.

BTW - Although it is no where near as profound, my new "13th Floor" is "The Train" off of the Idlewild album. Again, great job.

Peace

"where Sodomites get all the rights" i could be mis-reading this line. in a song as uplifting as this one is, that line struck me deep in my heart and psyche and as a gay, black, progressive, and hip hop loving individual.

..that i won't be apart of my people's uplift.

      Mtume says:

Andre, unfortunately, I don't think you're misreading that line at all. I don't know how much Dungeon Family music you listen to, but there seems to be a few cats in the crew who go out of their way to talk bad about gays. Big Rube (the dude doing the spoken-word intro) is definitely one of them. It's sad, it's too bad and if you listen to a lot of hip-hop, I'm sure it's neither the first nor the last time you'll hear something fucked up like that. ... I wish I could come up with something better to tell you.

"13th Floor" is easily my favorite Outkast song and one of my favorite songs period. As a teen it resonated and it still does now, not so much as a song about death as I don't like to think about that, but transition: "Autumn leaves must fall down..."
