This is the week of May 27th, 2007Hip Hop and Jazz, two of the most influential genres of music on a worldwide scale. Hip Hop wise we feature two of the originators: Grandmaster Flash and Grandmixer DXT (aka D.St.). Plus, we hear from sister rapper/producer T-Love. The jazz component features five versions of "Acknowledgment" from Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. That’s bagpipe artist Rufus Harley, guitarists Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin, trumpeter and bandleader Wynton Marsalis with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, saxophonist David Murray and his octet, and a live performance by the classic John Coltrane Quartet. It’s a wild week. You ever heard of Luis Gasca? I know you know War, A Tribe Called Quest and Herbie Hancock but what about Tek 9, Weldon Irvine and Lee Scratch Perry? Not to mention HKB Finn—a UK spoken word artist. The funny thing is most of this music is well known in their respective circles, it’s just that there’s usually not much overlap. Enjoy.
