LEVERT / “Casanova”
I don’t listen to radio. I’ve got my iPod hook-up for the car and my iTunes on the computer. Nevertheless, somehow, “Funny” was one of those pop songs that invaded my consciousness. I like it. Not love it. Not play it all the time. Just like it.
Now, “Casanova,” (from his group Levert's The Big Throwdown) on the other hand is a song you often hear at secondlines. Brass bands be knocking down the beat, the bass drum be booming, the snare doing those funky rolls, the horns hollering their ragged but infectious version of the melody, and everybody drops down on all fours, rumps rolling, tooted up in the air, and when the band does those breaks and the crowd hollers…”me and Romeo ain’t never been friends,” awww man, you got to be there to feel that joy. Life is sweet.
Gerald Levert died.
I thought about these two songs. They are classics of their genre: one a feel good song to reminisce about a lover (past, present or future) and the other a feel good song to which you shake what you got as you reminisce.
R.I.P. Gerald.

Rest in peace
I can’t honestly say I ever was a fan of Gerald Levert’s music, either solo or with Levert. Too slick and clean for me. But one thing is definitely true—the man went way too early. Think about it: Gerald’s dad (Eddie Levert of the O’Jays) is still not only alive and kicking, he’s still a popular performer. Seeing your son go before you has gotta hurt like hell. Like Kalamu said, may Gerald rest in peace.

Interestingly enough, I’ve always enjoyed Gerald’s music but strangely I don’t own a single…well, single of his. He was a talented individual who must have completed his life’s work sooner than expected. To that I say, well done, my man. Rest up Gerald…you worked hard and deserve to rest easy. To his family, you were blessed to have him your life.
